President Tinubu Arrives in UK for Historic Two-Day State Visit

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has arrived in the United Kingdom on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, to commence a landmark two-day state visit hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

This marks the first state visit by a Nigerian president to the UK in 37 years, since 1989, signaling a renewed era of strong bilateral ties between the two nations.

Accompanied by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the President landed at London Stansted Airport in the afternoon, where he was welcomed on behalf of the King by the Deputy Lieutenant of Essex and Nigeria's Acting High Commissioner to the UK.

The official program begins on Wednesday, March 18, with the Prince and Princess of Wales receiving the presidential couple at the Fairmont Hotel Windsor, followed by hosting at Windsor Castle.

The visit includes ceremonial events, bilateral meetings focused on trade, investment, security, and economic cooperation, as well as engagements with the Nigerian diaspora.

The state visit concludes on Thursday, March 19, with President Tinubu and the First Lady departing in the evening.

Analysts anticipate discussions on boosting Nigeria-UK relations in areas such as growth, defense, migration, and people-to-people links, building on the strategic partnership agreed in 2024.

The government has emphasized the visit as an opportunity to showcase Nigeria as open for business and deepen partnerships.

Security measures, including road closures and processions, have been put in place in preparation for the high-profile engagements.
