Presidency Debunks Fake Trump Tweet Criticising Tinubu Over Borno Attacks

The Nigerian Presidency has firmly debunked a viral screenshot circulating on social media that purported to show a tweet from U.S. President Donald Trump harshly criticizing President Bola Tinubu's handling of security issues following recent terrorist attacks in Borno State.

The fake tweet, which gained traction online, claimed: “The situation in Nigeria is a TOTAL DISASTER. Massive, coordinated suicide bombings tonight in Maiduguri. A hospital, a major market, the post office all hit! Many innocent people killed.

This is what happens when you have NO LEADERSHIP and open borders for terrorists! While his country is in a state of NATIONAL EMERGENCY, President Tinubu is currently in the UK on a ‘State Visit.’ Unbelievable! Shaking hands and having fancy dinners while his people are being blown up? I don’t think so! Prime Minister Starmer should tell him to get on a plane and GO HOME IMMEDIATELY.

”Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday to label the post as “Fake!!!” and shared an image highlighting the doctored screenshot. Independent checks, including by PUNCH Online, confirmed that no such message appears on Trump's verified accounts, such as @realDonaldTrump, or any official White House channels. The fabricated claim emerged amid real tragic events in Maiduguri, Borno State.

On Monday evening, following the breaking of the Ramadan fast, multiple suicide bombings—linked to Boko Haram/ISWAP targeted crowded public areas, including near markets and facilities. Authorities reported at least 23 people killed and over 100 injured. An additional overnight attack hit a military position in Ajilari, Borno.

In response to the attacks, President Tinubu described them as “profoundly upsetting” and characterized them as “the final desperate and frantic attempts” by terrorists facing pressure from Nigerian security forces. He expressed condolences to victims' families, stood in solidarity with Borno residents, reaffirmed that Nigeria would not succumb to fear, and ordered security and intelligence chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri to intensify efforts.

The Presidency's swift refutation underscores ongoing concerns about misinformation, particularly involving high-profile international figures, amid Nigeria's persistent security challenges in the North-East. No genuine statement from President Trump on the matter has been identified.
