Operatives of the Oyo State Police Command, in collaboration with local vigilantes, have successfully thwarted a highway robbery along the Ogbomoso-Ilorin Expressway, arresting one suspect and recovering a diesel-laden tanker.
The incident occurred near Egbeda Village when armed robbers blocked the road and intercepted a diesel tanker driven by Surajudeen Sulaiman.
The attackers dispossessed the driver and his assistants of their personal belongings before attempting to flee.During a routine joint security patrol, police and vigilantes encountered the blocked highway and the ongoing robbery. A gun battle broke out as the suspects tried to escape, leading to the arrest of one member of the gang identified as Dere Yahaya, aged 32.
Other suspects fled into nearby bushes, with some believed to have sustained gunshot injuries. A search operation is underway to apprehend the fleeing robbers.The diesel tanker was fully recovered and restored to the driver. No injuries were reported among the police, vigilantes, victims, or bystanders.
The Oyo State Police Command’s spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday. Commissioner of Police Femi Haruna commended the operatives and local security partners for their swift and effective response. He also acknowledged the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, in bolstering policing efforts across the state.
The command urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or information that could aid in tracking the escaped suspects to the nearest police station or through emergency lines.
This operation highlights ongoing efforts to curb highway crimes in Oyo State, particularly along major transit routes prone to such attacks targeting commercial vehicles carrying valuable cargo like petroleum products.
