Kano Scraps Higher Education Ministry, Removes Deputy as Commissioner

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has announced the abolition of the Ministry of Higher Education, merging its responsibilities into the existing Ministry of Education as part of a major restructuring of the state's education sector.

The decision, revealed on Monday, aims to enhance coordination, eliminate overlapping functions, reduce administrative costs, and improve overall oversight and quality in tertiary education across Kano State.

Under the new structure, all duties related to universities, colleges of education, scholarships, and other higher education affairs will now fall under the Ministry of Education. A dedicated Directorate of Higher Education will be established within the ministry to manage these specific functions effectively.

The reorganization also directly impacts Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who previously held the additional portfolio of Commissioner for Higher Education. With the ministry's dissolution, he has been relieved of that commissioner role.

Governor Yusuf's administration described the move as a strategic reform to streamline governance and accelerate improvements in the education sector. The changes come against a backdrop of reported political tensions between the governor and his deputy, including speculation about potential impeachment proceedings.

This restructuring reflects efforts to optimize resources and focus administrative efforts amid ongoing discussions about governance efficiency in the state.
