Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has announced a collaboration with former Kano State Governor and NNPP leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to restore the state's once-thriving industrial sector and boost economic recovery in northern Nigeria.
Speaking during a visit to Kwankwaso's residence in Kano for Sallah celebrations, Obi emphasized that the partnership goes beyond politics.
"Although we are today here not for politics but to celebrate Sallah with Kwankwaso, but I bet you we are putting a strong association to bring back Kano and its industrial hubs," he stated.
Obi specifically highlighted plans to revive key industrial areas, including the Bompai and Sharada industrial centers (Phases I and II), which have become largely inactive in recent years.
He also expressed commitment to restoring the historic Bank of the North, a former financial institution significant to the region's economy.
"We want to change Kano. We want to build a new Kano. What we want to do is bring back the power of Kano, all those factories in Bompai, Sharada 1, Sharada 2, Bank of the North, we want to bring all of them back," Obi added, highlighting the goal of reigniting economic activity, creating jobs, and returning Kano to its position as a major commercial and industrial powerhouse.
The gathering at Kwankwaso's Millar Road home drew other prominent opposition figures, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and former Bayelsa State Governor Senator Seriake Dickson, amid broader speculation about potential political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
While Obi framed the discussion around economic revival rather than partisan politics, the meeting has fueled conversations about cross-party cooperation to address regional challenges.
This collaboration comes at a time when Kano's industrial landscape has faced decline, with many factories and economic institutions dormant, impacting employment and growth in northern Nigeria.
Obi and Kwankwaso aim to reverse this trend through joint efforts focused on industrial rehabilitation and economic empowerment.
