IGP Summons Lagos Taskforce Chairman Over Alleged Misconduct

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has summoned CSP Adetayo Akerele, Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce), to appear at the Force Headquarters in Abuja over serious allegations of high-handedness, extortion, and corruption involving operatives under his command.

The invitation follows widespread public outcry and viral videos shared on social media by a blogger, accusing Taskforce officials of extortion, human rights abuses, and unlawful involvement in land-related activities.

Residents of Lagos have demanded Akerele's removal amid growing complaints about the unit's conduct.

A reliable source confirmed: “CSP Akerele has been asked to report at the Force Headquarters on Monday.

"The allegations are significant, and the outcome of the meeting will determine the next course of action."

This development aligns with the IGP's ongoing reforms emphasizing professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights within the Nigeria Police Force.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has also issued a stern warning to Taskforce personnel against any form of misconduct.

He stated that officers found guilty of corruption, extortion, or abuse of power would face strict disciplinary measures, including potential prosecution.

“We will not shield any officer found guilty of misconduct. If five officers could be brought before the court over the Owode Onirin incident, no one will be exempt where wrongdoing is established,” Jimoh said.

He added that the command would not hesitate to dissolve the Taskforce or replace its personnel if violations persist, while highlighting the recent deployment of reoriented officers and collaboration with civil society groups to improve standards.

The summons comes as part of broader efforts to address impunity and restore public trust in law enforcement, particularly in response to persistent complaints about the Taskforce's operations in enforcing environmental and special offences laws in Lagos.

The outcome of Akerele's appearance is expected to shape further actions by the police leadership.
