The national working committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Kabiru Turaki, says the party will not endorse President Bola Tinubu for a second term.
Speaking on Wednesday when he featured on The Morning Show,
a programme on Arise TV, Ini Ememobong, the national publicity secretary of the
Turaki-led faction, said it would be unreasonable for an opposition party like
the PDP to support the re-election of Tinubu, a member of the All Progressives
Congress (APC).
“It is improper, immoral, unjust, and unfair for an
opposition party of the standing of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to
endorse the candidature of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC,” Ememobong
said.
“It is impeccably clear that we will not endorse Tinubu. We
are not endorsing the president. We have said so. In fact, in every discussion
leading up to the reconciliation, whether in public or private, we have
insisted that the reconciliation is meant to strengthen the PDP as an
opposition party.”
The opposition party is polarised into two factions. The
Turaki camp is backed by Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo, and Bala Mohammed, his
Bauchi counterpart.
The Abdullahi Mohammed-led group has the support of Nyesom
Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who is campaigning for
Tinubu’s re-election.
In December 2025, Makinde said Wike vowed to “hold PDP” for
the president ahead of the 2027 elections — a claim the minister denied.
On Wednesday, Turaki said efforts are ongoing to reconcile
factions within the PDP to avoid jeopardising the party’s chances of fielding
candidates for the 2027 elections.
Turaki assured party aspirants that the PDP would field
candidates for all elective positions in line with its constitution.
