PDP Leaders Convene Emergency Meeting to Resolve Crisis After Appeal Court Ruling

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) held an expanded emergency meeting in Abuja yesterday to chart a path forward for the party following the Court of Appeal’s judgment that nullified the outcome of its November national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Chaired by BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, the session which continues today at 11:00 a.m. is expected to produce a clear position on reconciliation, leadership structure, and preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Attendees included prominent figures such as Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi) and Seyi Makinde (Oyo), former PDP Deputy National Chairman Bode George, former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, and other senior party stakeholders.

The BoT emphasized that while the party remains open to genuine reconciliation, it will not accept any arrangement that reduces the PDP to a mere appendage of the ruling party.

Speaking during the meeting, former Senate President Adolphus Wabara described the Appeal Court ruling as “an order for the party to begin again.”

He stressed the need for an open-minded approach to resolve the crisis, saying: “We respect the law. This is an opportunity for us to begin again… We should keep an open mind and see how we can get ourselves back on track.”

Meanwhile, the rival National Caretaker Working Committee backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has reaffirmed its determination to proceed with its planned national convention.

At a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Committee Chairman Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed declared the faction as the only legitimate leadership recognized by law, citing the nine appeals decided in their favour by the Appeal Court.

“The National Caretaker Working Committee is the only legitimate body that can present candidates in the build-up to the 2027 general elections,” Mohammed stated.

He confirmed that preparations for the convention, scheduled for March 29–30 at the National Stadium Velodrome in Abuja, are at an advanced stage.

He urged party members to unite behind the committee and called on the opposing faction to join forces for the party’s progress, assuring aspiring candidates that they will not face disqualification once a full National Working Committee is elected.
