Defence Minister Summons Service Chiefs Over Rising Attacks in North East

Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (Rtd), has called an emergency meeting with all Service Chiefs at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Abuja to address the recent surge in terrorist attacks on military bases in the North East.

The high-level session, which is currently underway, includes:

Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede

Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu

Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke

Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abass

Representatives from the National Intelligence Agency and other relevant security agencies

The meeting comes in response to a series of deadly assaults on military positions in Borno State and surrounding areas.

Recent incidents have resulted in the deaths of at least three Commanding Officers at the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, alongside numerous soldiers killed in action.

Hundreds of civilians remain in captivity following abductions linked to these attacks.Speaking briefly before the session went into closed-door deliberations, Gen. Musa acknowledged the losses suffered by the military but stressed that casualties on the terrorists' side have been significantly higher.

“We know we have recorded some casualties but it is more on the side of terrorists,” the retired four-star General said.

He emphasized that the purpose of the meeting is to conduct a comprehensive review of current operational strategies and adopt tougher, more effective measures to decisively counter the insurgents.

The Defence Minister reiterated the commitment of the Armed Forces to protect lives, secure communities, and restore peace in the North East, despite the challenges posed by sustained terrorist activities.

Further details on the outcome of the meeting and any new directives or strategic adjustments are expected to be announced in due course.
