Factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki (SAN), has filed an appeal against a bench warrant issued for his arrest by a High Court in Abuja.
The trial judge, Justice U.P. Kekemeke, ordered Turaki’s arrest after he failed to appear in court, ruling that there was no justification for his absence.
Turaki’s legal team is challenging the order, describing it as unjust. The development is part of the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP, particularly following disputes over the party’s national convention held in Ibadan.
Recall that the Court of Appeal had earlier upheld a Federal High Court ruling nullifying the Ibadan convention and the election of Turaki and other officials, citing violations of the Electoral Act, the Nigerian Constitution, and the PDP Constitution.
However, another panel of the Court of Appeal advised the warring factions to explore amicable settlement.
Turaki had recently stated that fresh reconciliation moves were ongoing within the party, noting that a high-powered committee had been set up to interface with estranged members ahead of future elections.
The appeal against the arrest order adds another layer to the protracted legal battles rocking Nigeria’s main opposition party.
