A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is expecting about 2,500 delegates to attend its national convention scheduled for Sunday, March 29, and Monday, March 30, 2026, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome in Abuja.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, a key figure in the faction, disclosed this during an inspection of the venue on Saturday, March 28, 2026.
He expressed confidence that preparations were almost complete, with logistics reaching about 95 per cent readiness.
“We do not expect more than 2,500 delegates,” Wike said, adding that seating arrangements for all states had been finalised and the VIP section was ready.
The convention aims to strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Wike, party positions have been zoned, with the presidency allocated to the South and the chairmanship to the North, in a consensus arrangement designed to ensure a smooth process.
He emphasised that the PDP was presenting a unified front without factions, moving away from the usual “unity list” that often highlighted internal divisions.
“There is room for accommodation. The PDP is a very large party. Look at the umbrella, it is wide enough to accommodate everyone,” Wike stated.
He acknowledged that grievances were inevitable in a large party but assured that reconciliation efforts would continue beyond the convention for the overall interest of the party.
Wike, who inspected the venue alongside other leaders including Okezie Ikpeazu (Chairman of the National Convention Planning Committee) and Mao Ohuabunwa (Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees), expressed optimism that the PDP would “surprise Nigerians” in the next general elections.
The faction, which operates with a 13-member Caretaker Committee led by Acting National Chairman Mohammed Abdulrahman and Acting National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has been at the centre of the PDP’s prolonged leadership crisis that escalated after conflicting conventions in 2025.
Despite ongoing legal battles and reconciliation talks, Wike dismissed the relevance of a Supreme Court appeal filed by a rival faction, insisting the convention would proceed as planned.
Party stakeholders hope the event will help present a cohesive PDP ready to challenge in 2027, even as efforts to resolve remaining internal disputes persist.
