Major opposition parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), have rolled out nationwide digital membership registration exercises to meet the requirements of the Electoral Act 2026 ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The moves come after opposition parties converged in Abuja last week to criticize the amended Electoral Act, claiming it favors the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) requires all political parties to submit comprehensive digital membership registers by April 2, 2026, with only verified registered members eligible to participate in primaries.
The PDP, led by Chairman Tanimu Turaki (SAN), announced via a statement from National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong that electronic membership registration begins nationwide on Monday, March 2, 2026.
The three-week exercise will run daily (except Sundays) at all PDP ward, chapter, and state offices across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with special cases handled at the National Secretariat.
A dedicated committee headed by National Organising Secretary Hon. Theophilus Daka Shan will oversee the process and address any issues.
The PDP urged members and interested Nigerians to visit their nearest ward office to register, emphasizing compliance with the law for compiling the digital register.
Similarly, the ADC, in a statement by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, has launched free nationwide online membership registration at www.adcregistration.ng.
Existing members must revalidate their details on the platform, building on an earlier physical kick-off in Abuja last month.
The party stressed that the digital system ensures adherence to the Electoral Act 2026 and INEC guidelines, while maintaining its objections to provisions seen as advantaging the ruling party.
Meanwhile, a source within the APC indicated that the party may reopen its e-registration portal this week following stakeholder consultations, allowing more registrations before the April 2 deadline.
The APC completed its earlier digital exercise last month. This follows INEC's revised 2027 election timetable, announced by Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, shifting presidential and National Assembly polls to January 16, 2027, and governorship/state assembly elections to February 6, 2027, after initial dates overlapped with Ramadan concerns and Senate amendments reduced the mandatory notice period.
The developments highlight intensified preparations for the 2027 polls, with opposition parties racing to build verifiable digital databases amid debates over the electoral framework's fairness.
