Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has dismissed recent assurances from All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders promising a free and fair governorship election on August 15, 2026, calling them suspicious and urging residents to remain vigilant against potential rigging or interference.
In a statement issued through his Spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor questioned the abrupt change in tone from APC governorship candidate Bola Oyebamiji and former Governor (now Minister) Adegboyega Oyetola, who had pledged commitment to a credible process.
“The recent statements by the opposition figures should not reduce the alertness of residents and voters across the state,” Adeleke said.
He described the shift as raising doubts: “The sudden shift in tone by the APC candidate and his supporters raises questions about what has changed.”
The governor referenced earlier alleged comments and social media posts from APC quarters suggesting reliance on federal power to influence or override the electorate's choice.
“Members of the public should treat such assurances cautiously given previous statements that suggested a determination to secure victory regardless of the electorate’s decision,” he stated.
Adeleke asked pointedly: “What now changed that the APC candidate suddenly embraced the language of free and fair elections? Why was the minister echoing the same line after earlier signals suggesting otherwise?”He emphasized that prior remarks could not be undone by later retractions and called for sustained watchfulness to guard against any electoral malpractice.
Reaffirming his side's position, the governor declared: “Myself, my team and my party are committed to mobilisation for a free and fair contest in which the votes of the people must count at all costs. The election should remain peaceful and free from intimidation or electoral malpractice.”
Adeleke appealed to federal institutions and security agencies to maintain strict neutrality for a level playing field.
He also praised civil society organizations and community mobilizers for their work in protecting voter rights and encouraging participation at the grassroots level.
The remarks heighten political tensions in Osun ahead of the 2026 poll, where Adeleke (PDP) seeks re-election against the APC.
Both parties have traded accusations, with repeated calls across the divide for peaceful, transparent conduct to reflect the true will of the people.
