A 50kg bag of cement has climbed to as high as ₦11,200 in parts of Abuja, according to recent market checks in key building materials hubs like Utako, adding to the mounting challenges faced by builders, small contractors, and ordinary Nigerians in the face of persistent economic pressures.
In Utako market and surrounding areas, BUA Cement is retailing at around ₦11,200 per bag at some outlets. Dangote Cement trades between ₦10,800 and ₦11,000 depending on the seller, with bulk buyers (such as those taking a full truckload of about 900 bags) sometimes securing it at roughly ₦10,500 per bag though this remains inaccessible for most individual or small-scale purchasers.
This latest spike continues an upward trend: prices moved from approximately ₦9,000 in late 2025 to ₦10,000 in January 2026, and have now escalated further in recent weeks.
Across Nigeria, including states like Kwara, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, and others, a 50kg bag generally ranges from ₦10,500 to ₦11,000 or higher for major brands such as Dangote, BUA, Lafarge, and Mangal.
Dealers point to ongoing supply chain issues, forex pressures, and other input costs as drivers of the increases, even though manufacturers have not issued a single nationwide official statement on the adjustments.
The rising costs are halting projects, inflating the price of sandcrete blocks, and making housing and infrastructure development less affordable, particularly in fast-growing urban centers like Abuja.
Stakeholders in the construction sector and everyday consumers are urging stronger government and industry measures to stabilize prices and relieve the broader cost-of-living strain tied to building materials.
