A tragic accident involving a petrol-laden tanker occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, March 18, 2026, along the Kaduna-Zaria Highway in Birnin Yero, Igabi Local Government Area.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Kaduna Operations Office, the incident happened when a tipper truck reportedly crossed the path of the tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
The sudden obstruction caused the tanker driver to lose control, leading the vehicle to skid off the road, overturn, and spill its fuel contents onto the roadway.
The crash resulted in one fatality the conductor of the tanker while the driver sustained injuries and was promptly evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Emergency responders, including NEMA and other agencies, quickly coordinated a multi-agency response.
They successfully recovered the overturned tanker, pulled it upright, and secured the scene to prevent further hazards.
Timely intervention also stopped community members from scooping the spilled fuel, averting the risk of a potential fire disaster or explosion.
Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the accident, with initial reports pointing to the actions of the tipper truck.
