Ondo Church Kidnap Victims Freed After N9m Ransom Payment

Five worshippers abducted from a Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) in Uso, Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, have been released after their families reportedly paid a N9 million ransom.

The gunmen stormed the church during an early morning prayer session on February 25, 2026, and kidnapped six worshippers.

Authorities, including the Ondo State Police Command, Nigerian Army, and local vigilantes, swiftly launched a rescue operation.Police spokesperson DSP Jimoh Abayomi confirmed that one victim was rescued shortly after the incident, and one suspect was arrested during the initial response.

The remaining five victims were freed on Monday evening (March 2, 2026) following negotiations with the kidnappers.

Reports indicate the abductors initially demanded significantly higher amounts up to N40 million per victim in some accounts before settling for the total N9 million paid by the families.

Abayomi confirmed the release and stated that the police command would continue investigations to apprehend the remaining kidnappers and prevent future incidents.

The abduction is part of a recent surge in gunmen attacks and kidnappings in Ondo State in early 2026, heightening security concerns.

Earlier, on February 20, a couple was abducted in Ilu-Abo community, Akure North LGA.In response to the rising insecurity, the Ondo State Police Commissioner had previously urged religious leaders to suspend night worship services temporarily to reduce vulnerability.

The release of the five worshippers has brought relief to the affected families and community, though concerns persist over the ongoing threat of kidnappings in the region.
