Ogun Govt Demolishes Shanties at Sango Tollgate to Curb Road Accidents

The Ogun State Government has demolished all illegal shanties, stalls, and makeshift structures along the road setbacks at the busy Sango Tollgate on the Ogun-Lagos border.

The enforcement exercise, carried out on Tuesday and led by Kafayat Lawal, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, targeted street trading activities and temporary structures on both sides of the tollgate as well as under-bridge areas.

Authorities had earlier issued multiple warnings and abatement notices to the affected traders.

Lawal explained that the move was necessary to eliminate hazards that have contributed to frequent accidents, resulting in loss of lives and permanent disabilities in the area.

“The exercise will free the Tollgate and under-bridge from street trading, which frequently leads to loss of life when there are mishaps,” she said.

“This has become a source of worry to the state government and well-meaning Nigerians. The government will not fold its hands and allow street trading in the Tollgate area, which has led to avoidable loss of life and permanent disabilities due to its danger.”

Traders were provided with an alternative trading site at Plaza Road, Sango. The state government, in collaboration with the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government and the Olota-in-Council, has also built a new market for their relocation.

Lawal warned that anyone caught engaging in street trading or peddling around the tollgate and under-bridge areas would face the full wrath of the law and urged the affected persons to move to the designated new location.

The action follows earlier announcements by the state government to relocate illegal motor parks and eradicate long-standing street trading at the tollgate, which has been a recurring scene of accidents for years.

Officials believe clearing these obstructions will significantly improve traffic flow, public safety, and reduce avoidable tragedies along the busy border corridor.
