The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Assistant Superintendent of Corps (ASC) Ogbodo Ene Victoria, a member of its Female Strike Force, during a tactical simulation exercise at the corps' National Headquarters in Abuja.
The incident occurred on Saturday, February 28, 2026 (with reports indicating the exercise took place around late February), as part of preparations for the 2026 World Civil Defence Day.
The drill simulated a "Tactical Rescue Operation" involving the rescue of kidnapped school children, featuring coordinated maneuvers by patrol vehicles.
During the exercise, the officer sustained critical injuries after being struck and run over by an operational patrol van.
She was immediately rushed to the Intensive Care Unit at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital), where medical teams fought to save her life, but she was later pronounced dead.
Commandant General Dr. Ahmed Audi described the loss as "painful and shocking," extending heartfelt condolences to the deceased's family, colleagues, and the entire NSCDC community nationwide.
He directed a high-level delegation to visit the bereaved family to convey the corps' sympathy and provide necessary support.
The NSCDC pledged a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the accident to establish accountability and prevent future occurrences.
The corps also committed to reviewing and strengthening safety protocols, emphasizing stricter adherence to operational safety standards during high-risk drills and improved coordination in simulations.
Additionally, the NSCDC vowed to provide a befitting burial for the late officer and ensure all her entitled service benefits are promptly paid to her family in line with public service regulations.
The Commandant General urged all personnel to remain steadfast in their duties while acknowledging the inherent risks in emergency response and tactical training, calling the tragedy a sobering reminder of the hazards involved.
This unfortunate event has highlighted the need for enhanced workplace safety measures as the NSCDC continues its mandate to protect lives and critical national infrastructure.
