In recent statements, NRC Managing Director Dr. Kayode Opeifa revealed that the corporation aims to electrify key rail routes within the next five years.
The initiative forms part of the NRC's broader Vision 2-5-10-20 strategic framework, which targets optimizing national rail assets in the first two years, transitioning to electric traction by the fifth year, doubling rail capacity within ten years, and expanding the network to at least 60,000 kilometers nationwide over 20 years.
Electrification efforts will begin with high-traffic and strategically located corridors, particularly starting in Lagos and Warri, where abundant gas resources can support reliable power generation for electric operations.
Opeifa emphasized that leveraging Nigeria's natural gas reserves will enable cost-effective and sustainable energy supply for the trains, potentially through gas-to-power solutions or collaboration with agencies like the Rural Electrification Agency.
The shift from diesel to electric trains is expected to deliver significant benefits, including higher speeds, greater operational efficiency, lower maintenance and fuel costs over time, reduced environmental impact, and enhanced reliability for both passenger and freight services.
This plan builds on recent achievements in Nigeria's rail sector, such as the completion of standard-gauge lines including the Abuja–Kaduna, Warri–Itakpe, Lagos–Ibadan railways, and the Abuja Rail Mass Transit system. Ongoing projects, like the Port Harcourt–Maiduguri corridor, further support nationwide connectivity.
Currently, Nigeria's only operational electric rail system is the Lagos Blue Line (a 27-kilometer urban mass transit route), with its initial phase running commercially since 2023 and an extension underway.
The national network, however, largely relies on diesel locomotives, making this proposed widespread electrification a transformative move toward a more modern, eco-friendly rail infrastructure.
Opeifa made these disclosures during media appearances, including on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily and other platforms, highlighting the government's commitment to rail reforms since 2015, which have replaced aging narrow-gauge tracks with modern standard-gauge systems.
The NRC's electrification roadmap is poised to boost economic integration, facilitate faster inter-city travel, strengthen cargo movement along key economic corridors, and position Nigeria's railways as a competitive alternative to road transport.
