Governors of the North-West states have launched a new regional framework aimed at strengthening peace, improving security, and promoting socio-economic development across the zone.
The framework, named the North-West Peace, Security and Development Framework (2026–2030), was adopted during the third meeting of the North-West Governors’ Forum held in Abuja.
Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Katsina State, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, emphasised the need for greater unity and collective action among the states to address persistent security challenges, organised crime, and socio-economic difficulties facing the region.Radda described the framework as a comprehensive roadmap that outlines shared priorities for the North-West.
“The framework reflects our collective vision and clearly defines our priorities. It is now important that we work with commitment to ensure that its objectives translate into real benefits for our people,” he said.
He added that the document was developed in response to the interconnected challenges in the region, stressing the importance of coordinated strategies and joint efforts among member states.
The governors also deliberated on strengthening the Forum’s secretariat. They approved a governance structure requiring the Director-General to present proposed work plans to the chairman before forwarding them to members for ratification.
The Secretariat was tasked with providing guidance to states on regional priorities to ensure alignment in planning and budgetary processes.
The Forum acknowledged progress made by Katsina and Zamfara states in adopting the National Policy on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and developing state-level action plans.
It urged other states in the region to follow suit to better support displaced populations.
Additionally, the governors directed the Secretariat to engage State Statisticians-General across the North-West to improve regional data management and support evidence-based policy planning.
The adoption of the five-year framework is seen as a significant step towards a more collaborative approach to tackling insecurity and fostering development in Nigeria’s N.orth-West region.
