Kano Politics Tense as Kwankwaso, Gawuna Edge Closer to ADC Ahead of 2027 Polls

An uneasy calm has settled over Kano State's political landscape as speculation mounts that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and founder of the influential Kwankwasiyya movement, is on the verge of defecting to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Reports also suggest that Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, former Kano Deputy Governor and the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the 2023 governorship election, may follow suit and abandon the APC for the emerging opposition platform.

Insiders indicate that Kwankwaso could formalize his move to the ADC as early as next week.

This follows recent meetings, including talks with ADC National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola and other opposition figures during Sallah celebrations in Kano, as well as discussions at his Abuja residence with Kano ADC leaders.

If the defections materialize, they could significantly reshape the 2027 electoral dynamics.

At the national level, Kwankwaso's entry into the ADC potentially aligning with figures like Peter Obi would intensify the opposition coalition's challenge to the ruling APC.

In Kano, a Gawuna move to the ADC alongside Kwankwaso would further complicate the gubernatorial race against the current NNPP-led administration (now with shifting alliances) and heighten tensions within the APC.

The developments come amid broader realignment efforts by opposition politicians ahead of 2027, with the ADC positioning itself as a key platform for anti-APC forces.
