NNPP to Align with ADC for 2027 Presidential Election, Says Spokesperson

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has announced it will form an alliance with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 presidential election, even after its 2023 flagbearer, Rabiu Kwankwaso, defected from the party.

NNPP National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday. He stressed that the NNPP remains active and will field candidates in the upcoming polls, while aligning with the ADC at the presidential and possibly some national levels.“The NNPP will continue to contest elections. Although at that level, we will be in alignment with the ADC towards the presidential elections and maybe some of the national elections, but we are going to have candidates down the ballot,” Johnson stated.

Johnson explained that Kwankwaso’s move to the ADC followed extensive consultations among opposition leaders. The former Kano State governor is expected to formally register as an ADC member in Kano State later on Monday.“There were a lot of discussions going on. Finally, some of the opposition leaders have come together and decided that it will best serve their purposes and that of Nigerians for them to come together under one platform to offer themselves as an alternative towards 2027,” he added.

Kwankwaso’s planned defection comes after weeks of high-level meetings with ADC leaders, including National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and Senator Seriake Dickson. The move is seen as part of a broader opposition effort to build a strong coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

Johnson dismissed concerns that Kwankwaso’s exit would weaken the NNPP, insisting the party is focused on serving Nigerians’ interests through strategic alignments.

The development occurs amid tensions within the Kwankwasiyya movement, including a recent rift with Kano Governor Abba Yusuf, who defected to the APC along with several allies, a move Kwankwaso publicly criticized.
