Nine Senators Defect to ADC in Major Political Realignment

In a significant shift within Nigeria's Senate, nine senators from three different political parties have formally notified the upper chamber of their defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The defections, announced during plenary on Thursday, reflect growing discontent with leadership crises and internal challenges in their former parties.

From the Labour Party (LP), three senators crossed over to the ADC:

Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central)

Senator Tony Nwoye (Anambra North)

Senator Ireti Kingibe (Federal Capital Territory)

Five senators resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ADC:  Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto South)

Senator Binos Dauda Yaroe (Adamawa South)

Senator Lawal Adamu Usman

Senator Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo

Senator Augustine Akobundu

The sole senator from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), also defected to the ADC. Eight of the defectors, those from the PDP and LP—cited leadership crises in their respective parties as the primary reason for their move.

However, the Senate raised concerns over Senator Abaribe's defection. He explained that he left APGA after being sacked by the party, but the chamber ruled that this justification does not align with constitutional provisions for defections. As a result, the Senate granted Senator Abaribe one week to reconsider his decision.

This mass defection comes amid broader political realignments in Nigeria, with the ADC emerging as a key platform for opposition figures seeking to consolidate ahead of future elections. The move further diversifies the Senate's composition and underscores ongoing fluidity in the country's political landscape.
