The Federal Government of Nigeria has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Clean Sustainable Renewable Solutions Limited (CSR Solutions) to distribute four million ECOCA solar electric cookstove units to households across all 774 local government areas.
The landmark agreement, signed on behalf of the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, by Permanent Secretary Nko Asanye Esuabana, falls under the Green Economy Empowerment 774 (GEE774) programme spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
Each local government area will receive approximately 5,000 units, ensuring equitable nationwide coverage. The initiative includes pilot projects in selected states to accelerate the adoption of clean energy solutions.
The ECOCA solar cookstoves aim to transform household cooking by replacing traditional methods reliant on firewood and charcoal.
Key benefits include:
Health improvements : Reducing indoor air pollution, which claims an estimated 95,000 lives annually in Nigeria, disproportionately affecting women and children.
Environmental gains : Each unit offsets about 4.5 tonnes of CO₂ per year, supporting Nigeria's net-zero emissions goal by 2060 and commitments under the Paris Agreement, while helping curb deforestation.
Economic and social empowerment : Easing the burden on women and girls who often spend hours collecting fuel, freeing up time for education, entrepreneurship, and income-generating activities.
The cookstoves come equipped with practical features such as three LED lights for basic energy access, two stainless steel pots, two USB charging points, and a monitoring system to track carbon offsets.
Minister Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim emphasized the broader vision: “As we commit to clean cooking and zero emissions today, we promise a healthier, cleaner and more equitable future for our women, children and communities.”
The partnership aligns with Nigeria's goals of integrating environmental sustainability, women's empowerment, and inclusive economic growth through collaborative stakeholder efforts.
