A faction of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has said it would do whatever it takes legally to ensure change in government in the country.
This was disclosed by the National Leader of the group, Oba Olaitan Oladipo, while speaking to journalists during its monthly meeting held in Ilesa, Osun State, on Tuesday.
Oba Oladipo, who expressed displeasure with how the affairs of the country were being managed, said the group was ready to lead efforts that would change the trajectory of Nigeria.
The Afenifere leader noted that poor governance has made life unbearable for many Nigerians, and declared readiness to collaborate with other interested individuals and groups, towards effecting change in the government of the country.
He also said the leadership of the Social Democratic Party had expressed interest in working with Afenifere, assuring that more people willing to join forces with the group would be given the opportunity.
“This is our general meeting. We are going to change the trajectory of this country. What is happening now, we don’t accept it.
“Nigeria must be governed properly. The way it is governed now, we don’t like it and we will do everything we can legitimately and legally to change it and this is the beginning,” Oladipo said.
Speaking on efforts to bring on board more people who have an interest in the core ideology of Afenifere, Oladipo said, “We formed the Social Democratic Party. I established SDP in Osun State. Former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola is here with us. We are lucky that some people may be willing to join us.”
In his remarks, Osun State Chairman of Afenifere, Mr Goke Omigbodun, said that, besides the monthly meeting of Afenifere that was being held, the group would also be meeting the leadership of the Social Democratic Party.
Omigbodun further said, “Today is an extraordinary meeting because not only are we meeting as Afenifere, we are also having the leadership of the Social Development Party, the SDP, joining us in this meeting today.
We want life to be good for everybody. And so we always have a political party or particular candidates that we associate with.
“The Social Democratic Party was established by Afenifere under the first chairmanship of now Oba Olu Falaye, who was the national chairman of the party then. But now, things have moved, and so Afenifere is declaring again that the baby that we birthed then must survive.
“The essential core of the Afenifere now resides in the Social Democratic Party and that is what we are celebrating here today again and that is why the leadership of the Social Democratic Party is also here with us.”
Ex-Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, while addressing the gathering, commended Oladipo for the invitation extended to him, and called for unity within the race.
Oyinlola, who advised Yoruba leaders against playing politics with the interests of their people, demanded more commitment towards solving challenges peculiar to the race within the larger Nigerian setup.
The meeting had in attendance dignitaries that include legal practitioner, Dele Farotimi, ex-Lagos State Deputy Governor, Bucknor Akerele, SDP National Secretary, Dr Olu Agunloye, among others.
