Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna, has returned to the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
El-Rufai on Tuesday appeared to the federal high court in
Kaduna and state high court in Kaduna to face trial on separate charges.
At the state high court in Kaduna, the proposed arraignment
of el-Rufai could not take place because the second defendant in the case was
not in court.
The court adjourned the arraignment to April 10.
At the federal high court in Kaduna, Rilwani Aikawa, a
judge, adjourned the bail application of el-Rufai to Wednesday, April 1.
The prosecutor told the court that the counter affidavit
against the bail application was just filed.
On March 24, el-Rufai and Joel Adoga were arraigned by the
Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC)
before the federal high court on charges bordering on alleged fraud and money
laundering.
The defendants pleaded not guilty. Subsequently, the court
adjourned the bail hearing to March 31.
On March 27, the ICPC released el-Rufai on compassionate
grounds following the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma.
El-Rufai’s mother died in Egypt on March 27 where she was
receiving medical treatment. Her burial rites took place on March 28.
ICPC COMMENT
After the court proceedings at the federal high court in
Abuja, the former Kaduna governor was said to have been taken away by ICPC
operatives.
Speaking with TheCable, John Okor Odey, ICPC spokesperson,
said the former governor is in ICPC custody.
“Temporary leave is different from bail. He was granted
temporary leave to attend his mother’s burial. He is still in our custody. We
took him to court,” Odey said.
