Nigeria Calls on Gulf States to Partner on Energy Supply Amid Middle East Tensions

Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has urged Gulf oil and gas producers to view the country as a strategic partner rather than a rival, arguing that closer cooperation would help diversify and strengthen global energy supplies during the current Middle East conflict.

Speaking to Reuters, Tuggar emphasized Nigeria's large untapped reserves as a dependable alternative source of crude oil and natural gas. With global hydrocarbon flows at risk from regional instability and long-term demand for oil and gas remaining strong, he said deeper ties could benefit both sides.

"The crisis reinforces Nigeria’s long-standing position that potential competitors should instead invest and collaborate," Tuggar stated. He encouraged Gulf states to partner with Nigeria and invest in its energy sector to diversify their market exposure and work jointly with the federal government.

Tuggar highlighted recent gains under President Bola Tinubu, noting that daily crude oil production has risen to about 1.7 million barrels per day since 2023, up from roughly 1.4 million barrels. He added that fresh investment in new fields and infrastructure could unlock further growth.

The minister acknowledged, however, that Nigeria continues to suffer from high global oil prices due to its heavy reliance on imported refined petroleum products.

Tuggar's comments reflect Nigeria's broader effort to attract Gulf investment as a pathway to shared energy security in an increasingly volatile global market.
