King Charles III welcomed members of the Nigerian diaspora in the United Kingdom to a special reception at St James’s Palace in London on Wednesday evening, March 11, 2026.
The event served as a warm and celebratory prelude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s historic state visit to the United Kingdom, the first by a Nigerian head of state in 37 years.
The gathering highlighted the vibrant contributions of Britain’s Nigerian community, featuring authentic Nigerian cuisine such as jollof rice and lively performances by Dele Sosimi and the Afrobeats Orchestra. King Charles greeted guests personally, shaking hands and engaging in warm conversations that reflected the deepening cultural and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
The Royal Family later shared their appreciation on social media, calling the evening “a wonderful occasion” and thanking everyone involved. Among the notable attendees were Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa (Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission), Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, and prominent diaspora figures including UK rapper Tinie Tempah.
The reception sets the tone for President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s official state visit, scheduled for March 18–19, 2026, as guests of King Charles and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle. The visit is expected to strengthen bilateral relations, with a programme that includes exhibitions, additional diaspora events, and high-level discussions.
Preparations are already underway in Windsor, with temporary airspace restrictions, road closures, and increased security measures in place to ensure the visit proceeds smoothly and safely.
