Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has strongly condemned the coordinated suicide bombings that hit Maiduguri, Borno State's capital, on Monday evening, calling them a "barbaric, inhumane, and direct assault on innocent citizens."
The attacks, believed to involve Boko Haram-linked suicide bombers, took place around 7:02 p.m. in several crowded areas, including the Monday Market axis, the Post Office vicinity, and the entrance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).
Reports indicate at least 23 people were killed and more than 100 injured in one of the city's most severe recent incidents. No group has officially claimed responsibility, though the pattern points to insurgent efforts to maximize casualties and sow panic.
From Saudi Arabia, where he is performing Umrah, Ndume conveyed deep sorrow and offered condolences to Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the families of the victims, and those injured and receiving care. "I cannot begin to imagine the pain and burden on our Governor at this moment.
This is a deeply heartbreaking situation for him and for all of us. May Allah grant us comfort, strength, and healing," he stated. He commended the swift actions of security forces and called for intensified measures to prevent additional attacks, especially in light of earlier military alerts about potential suicide bomber infiltrations into Maiduguri.
As Eid celebrations draw near, Ndume urged greater vigilance across Borno State, with particular emphasis on Borno South. "I urge all residents, not only in Maiduguri but across Borno State, particularly in Borno South, to stay alert and report any suspicious activity. We must not let our guard down at this critical time," he stressed.
Ndume closed with prayers for the peaceful repose of the deceased, quick recovery for the injured, and lasting peace in Borno State and throughout Nigeria.
