Accord party gov candidate promises improved development in Ekiti

The candidate of Accord Party in the 2026 Ekiti State governorship election 2026, Opeyemi Falegan, has said he is in the race to win, form the next government and ensure better lives for the people of the state.

Falegan, who dismissed rumours that he was working for the governor and All Progressives Congress candidate, Biodun Oyebanji, said his ambition to govern Ekiti State was to bring about development and improve citizens’ welfare.

He spoke in Ado Ekiti on Monday during an interactive session with leaders of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners drawn from the 16 local government areas of the state, where he promised improved welfare packages for senior citizens if elected governor.

The Accord candidate, who acknowledged the retirees’ selfless service to the development of the state, said, “If given the opportunity to lead Ekiti, my administration will pay greater attention to your (pensioners’) needs and concerns.”

He said pensioners in Ekiti State were being unfairly treated despite dedicating decades of service to the state’s development, adding that many retirees had spent as much as 35 years in the civil service but were still struggling to receive their entitlements.

Falegan, who took a swipe at the APC government in the state for not clearing the backlog of gratuities owed to retirees, said, “I will do everything possible to ensure that they are taken care of and treated with the dignity they deserve. I want to celebrate them while they are alive and can still enjoy the fruits of their labour.

“I want to assure the pensioners that their welfare will remain a top priority for me. Everything required to improve their well-being and ensure they live comfortably will receive serious attention, and I will do all it takes to make it happen.”

He assured the people of Ekiti that their votes for him would translate into better lives, improved welfare and development, saying, “My message to the good people of Ekiti State is simple: I love you deeply and I have good plans for our state. If you give me the opportunity to serve you, I promise I will not disappoint you.”

The Accord candidate described insinuations that he was in alliance with Oyebanji as “mere rumour because the peddlers know that the people of Ekiti State really love me. Governor Oyebanji has actually failed the people, even the pensioners. I can never work with somebody like that.

“I am running for governor of Ekiti State. June 20 is the date. I am in the race to win and form the next government. If the Ekiti people give me the opportunity, I will not disappoint them. I am not working for anyone; I have been financing a foundation for the past 10 years. I am working for myself. I represent Accord,” he said.

While canvassing votes from Ekiti residents, Falegan stressed the need for eligible voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards to enable them to exercise their civic responsibility in the June 20 election.

Earlier, the state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Temitope Popoola, commended Falegan for visiting the pensioners, describing the gesture as a demonstration of his respect and concern for senior citizens in the state.

Popoola said retirees in Ekiti would only support a governorship candidate who shows a genuine commitment to addressing their demands, particularly the payment of outstanding gratuities and the improvement of pensioners’ welfare.
