MDCN Suspends Doctors Over Chimamanda’s Son Death Case

The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel has suspended Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos, and two other medical professionals from practicing in Nigeria.

The interim suspension was announced on March 3, 2026, after the panel established a prima facie case of medical negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, son of author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr. Ivara Esege.

The child died on January 7, 2026, at the hospital following alleged lapses in care, including an overdose of the sedative propofol, inadequate monitoring, and failure to provide necessary oxygen support.

He had been due for transfer to Johns Hopkins Hospital in the US the next day when he suffered cardiac arrest.

The suspension remains in effect pending the final determination of the case by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

A coroner’s inquest into the death is scheduled to formally commence on April 14, 2026, at the Yaba Magistrate Court, though the child’s cremation has complicated the availability of forensic evidence.

The case has triggered intense public debate about medical standards, patient safety, and accountability in Nigeria’s private healthcare sector.

Euracare has maintained that treatment adhered to standard protocols given the child’s condition on admission.

Lagos State Government previously ordered an investigation, and the family issued a legal notice demanding preservation of all medical records and evidence.

The regulatory suspension reflects growing pressure for accountability following the high-profile tragedy.
