Gunmen on motorcycles stormed Agwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday night, killing an unspecified number of residents.
The attackers invaded the community around 7:30 pm while residents were carrying out their normal activities. Eyewitnesses said the gunmen fired indiscriminately, throwing the area into panic before fleeing immediately after the assault.
As of press time, the exact death toll remained unclear, as residents were still trying to identify the victims.
In the aftermath of the attack, angry youths in the community blocked roads and killed several Napep (motorcycle taxi) riders and their passengers.
Soldiers from Operation Enduring Peace were quickly deployed to the scene to restore calm and prevent further violence.
The operation’s spokesperson, Captain Polycap Oteh, said he would provide more details once the cause of the attack is fully ascertained.
The incident has heightened tension across Jos metropolis.This latest attack adds to the recurring security challenges in parts of Plateau State.
