The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has strongly condemned the multiple bomb explosions that struck Maiduguri, Borno State, on Monday evening, March 16, 2026, labeling the attacks as barbaric, heinous, and a direct assault on innocent civilians.
The blasts, suspected to be suicide bombings, occurred almost simultaneously at three locations: the entrance gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), the Monday Market Roundabout, and the Post Office area. Authorities have confirmed at least 23 people killed and 146 others injured, with many victims receiving treatment in hospitals across the city.
In a statement issued as NSGF Chairman, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy. He extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Borno State, particularly the families who lost loved ones in the senseless violence.
Governor Yahaya described the incident as a cruel and cowardly act designed to instill fear and destabilize the fragile peace in the North-East region. “This heinous act is a cruel assault on our collective humanity and must be condemned in the strongest terms,” he stated.
He conveyed sympathies to the injured, praying for their swift and full recovery, and commended first responders, security agencies, and emergency services for their rapid response and efforts in managing the crisis.
Reaffirming the northern governors' unwavering commitment, Yahaya pledged continued collaboration with the Federal Government and security forces to eradicate terrorism and other threats undermining regional stability.
He urged residents to stay calm, remain vigilant, and cooperate with authorities by providing credible information to support investigations.
“Now more than ever, we must stand united against forces of terror. Our resolve to secure our region remains firm, and together we shall overcome these cowardly acts,” he added.
The NSGF chairman called for intensified measures to bring the perpetrators to justice swiftly and prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased.
This condemnation comes amid ongoing security challenges in the North-East, where Borno State has faced renewed insurgent activities despite years of relative calm in some areas. The attacks follow recent military operations in the region, highlighting the persistent threat to civilian safety.
