US-Israel Airstrikes Target Key Iranian Leadership Site

Israel and the United States have carried out airstrikes on the building housing Iran's Assembly of Experts in Qom, south of Tehran, severely damaging the facility.

The strike occurred on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, as the 88-member clerical body, responsible for electing, supervising, and potentially dismissing the Supreme Leader was reportedly convening to select a successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Khamenei was killed in an earlier wave of joint US-Israeli attacks on Saturday, February 28, 2026, triggering a leadership crisis and ongoing military escalation.

Iranian state-affiliated media, including Tasnim news agency, described the attack as targeting the Assembly of Experts building in Qom, labeling it an assault by "American-Zionist criminals."

Local reports showed footage of the structure heavily damaged or flattened, though details on casualties among assembly members or others present remained unclear at the time of reporting.

The Assembly of Experts plays a central role in Iran's theocratic system, tasked with appointing the supreme leader following Khamenei's death.

Iran announced a transition process on Sunday, forming an interim leadership council comprising the president, head of the judiciary, and a jurist from the Guardian Council to manage affairs temporarily.

The latest strike comes amid intensified US-Israeli operations against Iranian targets, including leadership sites, military installations, and nuclear-related facilities, following Khamenei's assassination.

Israeli sources indicated the Qom building was hit during discussions or voting on the successor.Iran's President Pezeshkian has stated the government continues to function despite the bombings, while the regime faces mounting pressure in the escalating conflict.

No immediate official confirmation of deaths or injuries from the Qom strike has been released, and the full impact on the succession process remains uncertain amid restricted information flow in Iran.
