Tehran's state-affiliated news agencies, Fars and Tasnim, have confirmed that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed early Saturday in his office during a major joint airstrike carried out by the United States and Israel.
The 86-year-old cleric, who had led Iran's Islamic Republic since 1989, was reportedly performing his official duties at the time of the attack on his compound in Tehran.
Iranian state media described his death as martyrdom, noting that family members, including his daughter, son-in-law, grandchild, and possibly others were also killed in the strikes.
In response, Iran's government has declared a 40-day period of public mourning for the hardline leader, who ruled with an iron grip for nearly four decades.
A week-long nationwide public holiday has also been announced as the nation grapples with the loss and escalating regional conflict.
The killing marks a dramatic escalation in the ongoing US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, which President Donald Trump has framed as a push for regime change.
Iran has vowed severe retaliation, with fresh missile strikes launched toward Israel and US interests in the region following the confirmation of Khamenei's death.
The event has plunged the Islamic Republic into uncertainty, raising questions about succession and the future stability of the regime amid continued airstrikes and international reactions.
