The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed how the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, secured the majority of seats in the FCT Area Council elections.
Recall that in the FCT Area Council elections held on 21st
February 2026, the APC emerged victorious in five of the six Area Council
chairmanship positions, with Gwagwalada Area Council being the only council won
by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking during his first monthly media parley for 2026 in
Abuja on Monday, Wike explained why the APC prevailed.
According to him, the key factor was the party’s focus on
satellite towns rather than concentrating solely on the city center.
“Let’s tell ourselves the simple truth,” Wike said. “Who
would have beaten Asiwaju’s government in this FCT election if all we did was
focus on the city? All over the years, ruling parties have struggled to win in
the city because the people there talk a lot but rarely come out to vote.”
Wike, who revealed that he was personally appointed minister
when President Tinubu came into power, stressed the importance of spreading
governance efforts beyond the city.
“The President said we must go to the satellite towns and
let them feel the impact of governance, let them feel the impact of
government,” he said.
“And we did that. When you go to places like Karu, Kabusa,
Wasa, you see how happy the people are. That’s where the voters came out in
numbers.”
The minister also highlighted the difference between
residents in the city and those in satellite towns.
“Where did people not come out? All of them are within the
city. But when we reached the satellite towns, people voted and made their
voices heard. That’s why APC was able to secure the majority of seats.”
