Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has redeemed his earlier promise by providing financial and material support to the families of 16 hunters lynched in Uromi, Edo State, last year.
On Friday, a state government delegation led by Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim Waiya (also referred to as Ibrahim Waiya in some reports), visited affected families in Bunkure Local Government Area.
The delegation disbursed N300,000 to each of the 16 families of the deceased hunters and N200,000 to each of the 13 survivors, along with food items such as two bags of rice per beneficiary.
The total cash intervention amounted to N7.4 million.Waiya explained that the governor directed the immediate fulfillment of the pledge after learning that an earlier commitment made during a condolence visit had not yet been implemented.
He emphasized Governor Yusuf's commitment to easing the hardship faced by the victims' families.
The commissioner also reaffirmed the state's ongoing engagement with the Edo State Government to ensure that the compensation promised by Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo is fully paid.
Reports indicate that Edo has opened dedicated bank accounts for the families, with the payment process reportedly underway.
The tragic incident occurred in 2025 when the hunters, mostly from Kano and traveling home for Sallah celebrations, were ambushed and killed by a mob in Uromi after being mistaken for kidnappers.
The attack drew widespread condemnation and prompted joint visits by the governors of Kano and Edo states.
Waiya noted that Governor Yusuf would consider further assistance, including support for the educational needs of the victims' children.
This gesture comes nearly one year after the incident, amid continued calls from affected families and civil society for full justice and compensation.
