Four Dead as Truck Collides with Commercial Bus on Lekki-Epe Expressway

A tragic road crash on the Lekki–Epe Expressway has claimed the lives of four passengers after a heavy-duty truck smashed into a commercial mini-bus over the weekend.

The incident occurred opposite Beechwood in Shapati, inward Ajah, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

In a statement released by the agency’s spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, the collision involved a HOWO truck bearing registration number KNN 313 YL and a Suzuki commercial mini-bus, commonly referred to as a “korope.”

LASTMA officials confirmed that four people died at the scene from the impact. Emergency responders from the agency, alongside other rescue services, arrived promptly to manage the accident scene, clear the wreckage, and restore traffic flow on the busy corridor.

The Lekki–Epe Expressway, a major arterial route connecting Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Lekki, and the Epe axis, has witnessed frequent crashes in recent years, often attributed to speeding, overloading, reckless driving by commercial vehicle operators, and poor vehicle maintenance particularly among heavy trucks.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased or details on whether any survivors sustained injuries.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, with LASTMA urging all road users to exercise caution, obey traffic rules, and ensure vehicles are roadworthy.

The agency reiterated its call for stricter enforcement of safety regulations, especially for articulated vehicles and commercial buses that ply high-traffic routes.

This latest fatality adds to the growing toll of road traffic incidents in Lagos State, where thousands lose their lives or suffer serious injuries annually due to preventable crashes.
