Former FCT Senator Philip Aduda Resigns from PDP, Eyes Senate Return Under APC

Former Senator Philip Aduda, who represented the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has resigned from the party amid plans to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Aduda, a former Senate Minority Leader in the 9th Assembly, is positioning himself to contest the FCT senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.

His move comes against the backdrop of ongoing political realignments in the territory, where he has been a prominent figure for years.

The defection is reportedly supported by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, a key political influencer in Abuja.

Wike has publicly vowed to ensure that the incumbent FCT Senator, Ireti Kingibe (who won the seat in 2023 on the Labour Party platform), does not return in 2027.

The minister has repeatedly criticized Kingibe's performance, stating she has "no project to show" for her tenure and reaffirming his stance that she will not secure re-election.

Aduda's shift to the APC follows earlier rumors and denials of defection in previous years, but recent reports indicate he has cited the need for stronger representation of FCT indigenes at the federal level, including in the Federal Executive Council as a key motivation.

Wike's backing is seen as a strategic effort to consolidate APC influence in the capital ahead of 2027, potentially delivering significant votes to President Bola Tinubu and the party.

The development underscores the fluid political landscape in the FCT, where alliances and defections continue to shape preparations for the next election cycle.
