The Nigerian Federal Government has once again confirmed its dedication to finishing the reconstruction of the critical Abuja-Kaduna highway by the end of April 2026.
During a recent inspection tour organized as part of the ongoing National Media Tour, officials from the Federal Ministry of Works announced that the project specifically Section One has achieved approximately 80% completion.
This includes the delivery of about 60 kilometers of the redesigned Continuous Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP), which was adopted to enhance durability and longevity compared to the previous asphalt design. Out of the total 81 kilometers across both lanes in this section, only 21 kilometers remain outstanding.
The ministry expressed strong confidence in meeting the deadline, with construction teams working round-the-clock shifts, including day and night operations, to ensure timely delivery.
The Controller of Works, Chukuma Kalu, emphasized the government's resolve, stating that efforts are advancing steadily to complete the remaining stretch before the end of April. Senior Project Manager from contractor Infiouest, Robert Turner, echoed this assurance, highlighting the intensive work schedule in place.
This Abuja-Kaduna corridor is regarded as one of Nigeria's most vital transport links, serving as a major artery for passenger movement, goods transportation, and economic activity between the Federal Capital Territory and northern regions.
The long-delayed reconstruction project was re-awarded after the termination of the prior contract with Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, with the aim of accelerating progress under the new arrangement.
Once fully completed, the upgraded highway is expected to significantly improve road safety, reduce travel times, and boost connectivity along this high-traffic route. The Federal Government described the project as the "heartbeat of the nation" and continues to prioritize its prompt delivery.
