The Federal Ministry of Education has directed that every teacher in public and private secondary schools across Nigeria must be fully registered and licensed by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa issued the directive to strengthen professionalism in the teaching profession and eliminate unqualified teachers from classrooms.
Under the new policy, starting in 2027, accreditation of secondary schools as examination centres for major public exams, including WASSCE (March 2027), NABTEB (May 2027), NECO, and SAISSCE (both June 2027) will be strictly tied to TRCN certification of their teachers. Schools failing to comply risk disqualification.
The ministry has set a compliance timeline: schools must achieve at least 75% TRCN-registered teachers by the end of 2026 and reach 100% compliance by 2027.
State governments have been urged to support the rollout by ensuring teachers in state-owned and private secondary schools obtain the required registration and licensing within the two-year window.
Dr. Alausa emphasized: “No teacher will stand before a Nigerian classroom without TRCN registration and licensing.”
He described the move as part of broader efforts to restore quality, accountability, and professionalism in the education sector.
The policy also realigns the roles of TRCN and the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI). TRCN will focus on regulation, licensing, and standards enforcement, while NTI handles in-service training and professional development.
Experienced teachers can access abridged certification programmes through NTI to meet the requirements.
The TRCN digital portal has been upgraded to make registration, license renewal, and record updates easier for educators nationwide.
This directive builds on ongoing reforms aimed at ensuring every Nigerian child is taught by competent, certified professionals. Compliance monitoring will be intensified in the coming months.
