FG Approves GIS-Enabled Alphanumeric Digital Postcode System for Nigeria

In a major step toward modernizing the country's addressing infrastructure, the Federal Executive Council (FEC), under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has approved the implementation of a Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled alphanumeric digital postcode system nationwide.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, who described it as part of the ministry's ongoing efforts to deliver on its strategic blueprint for a modern, inclusive digital economy.

Working closely with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) and Postmaster General Tola Odeyemi and her team, the government will introduce a geospatial intelligent addressing system. This replaces traditional numeric or descriptive addresses with a more precise alphanumeric framework tied to geographic coordinates, allowing for greater accuracy in identifying locations across urban, rural, and remote areas.

The new system aims to significantly improve mail and parcel delivery speed and reliability through NIPOST. However, its benefits extend far beyond postal services: it will act as critical national infrastructure by enhancing national planning, speeding up emergency responses (such as from security and health services), streamlining logistics and e-commerce operations, promoting financial inclusion, supporting security efforts, aiding urban planning, and improving the delivery of government services.

Dr. Bosun Tijani stated: “Beyond strengthening postal operations, the Digital Postcode System will also serve as an important national enabler supporting better national planning, improved emergency response, more efficient logistics and e-commerce, and the delivery of government services.

"This approval represents another step forward in our commitment to building the enabling environment to support a modern, inclusive, and globally competitive digital economy.”

Postmaster General Tola Odeyemi emphasized the transformative potential: “It is a critical national infrastructure that enables e-commerce, logistics, emergency services, financial inclusion, security, urban planning, and effective public service delivery.

"By introducing an alphanumeric addressing framework, Nigeria will now be able to identify locations with far greater precision across cities, towns, and rural communities. This will significantly improve how goods, services, and digital platforms reach Nigerians everywhere.”

This milestone builds on NIPOST's recent progress in digitizing processes, including generating over ₦10 billion in revenue in 2025 by addressing inefficiencies. While no specific rollout timeline was detailed in the announcement, the approval clears the path for nationwide implementation, marking a key advancement in Nigeria's digital transformation agenda.
