The Federal High Court has authorised the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to access and forensically examine electronic devices recovered from the Abuja residence of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik issued the order on Thursday following an ex-parte application filed by the ICPC and argued by its counsel, Dr. Osuobeni Akponimisingha.
The commission sought permission to inspect, conduct forensic examinations, and extract data from the devices as part of its ongoing investigation into the ex-governor.
The seized items include:
Sony HD-EGS storage device
ITB Transcend storage device
Toshiba storage device
Samsung mobile phone
Nokia mobile phone (N958GB)
Blackberry mobile phone
Google IDEOS phone
Samsung storage device (SPO802N)
Remarkable tablet
Apple MacBook Pro (black)
Seagate Freeagent desk external drive
ZTE mobile phone
10 flash drives
Microcell memory card
In her ruling, Justice Abdulmalik permitted the ICPC to inspect the devices, perform forensic examinations and data extractions—including public documents, WhatsApp chats, text messages, photos, call logs, and related information and analyse the contents forensically or through other means.
The authorisation is specifically for investigative purposes related to the seized items.El-Rufai previously declined to consent to the examination of the devices, according to earlier court filings by the ICPC.
The devices were recovered during a search of his home conducted under a warrant.
This development comes amid the ICPC's broader probe into allegations involving the former governor, including issues related to his time in office in Kaduna State.
The ruling allows investigators to proceed with detailed analysis of the digital evidence without the owner's consent.
