FAAN Dismisses Viral Claim of Bandit Plane Hijack Attempt at Akure Airport

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has firmly refuted social media rumors claiming that bandits attempted to hijack an aircraft at Akure Airport in Ondo State on Sunday.

The false narrative originated from an X post by user @Admiral_Cyborg, who wrote: “While we were busy talking about Nasboi and VDM, bandits tried to hijack a plane in broad daylight, at Akure Airport. Let me rephrase, bandits attempted to seize and take control of a Plane in Ondo State.”

FAAN clarified that no such hijack attempt occurred. The agency emphasized that its earlier press release made no mention of any hijacking or attempt to board or control an aircraft.

“There was no part of the press release that mentioned or suggested a ‘hijack,’' FAAN stated on X, urging the public to rely on official information.

The incident actually involved the arrest of four suspected bandits near the airport perimeter. It stemmed from a distress alert about suspicious individuals spotted behind the fence toward the Eleyewo community.

A swift joint operation was launched by FAAN’s Aviation Security (AVSEC), the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Amotekun Corps, and local vigilantes.

During the search, the suspects attempted to flee, but four were apprehended and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command for interrogation.

FAAN commended the effective collaboration among the security teams, which prevented any potential threat from escalating.

The event has underscored ongoing concerns about airport perimeter security in Nigeria. In response, the Federal Government through the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, with support from the Presidency under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has fast-tracked the installation of modern perimeter fencing and upgraded security measures at airports nationwide.

FAAN confirmed that phased work is already underway to better protect facilities against unauthorized access and other threats.
