Former Jigawa State Governor and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sule Lamido, has urged party leaders and members to accept the caretaker committee established by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as a pragmatic step toward resolving the ongoing leadership crisis.
Lamido made the appeal on Saturday, March 15, 2026, while addressing journalists during a Ramadan Iftar gathering with PDP executives and members in his hometown of Bamaina, Jigawa State.
He described Wike as a highly strategic and clever politician who effectively capitalized on the vacuum created when the term of the PDP's National Working Committee (NWC) expired, leaving no functional leadership structure in place.
“Wike is someone who is really, really clever. I think he realised everything and managed to form a caretaker committee. By the time the existing NWC term ended, the only structure in place was the one backed by Wike,” Lamido stated.
Despite acknowledging that many party members may harbor personal disagreements or dislike toward Wike, Lamido emphasized the need for unity, brotherhood, and genuine reconciliation to strengthen the PDP ahead of future electoral challenges.
“Even though many people might not like Wike or may disagree with him, we should still invite him in the spirit of Nigeria, in the spirit of brotherhood and PDP unity, and in the spirit of reconciliation,” he added.
Lamido stressed that the party must prioritize healing internal divisions and focus on collective efforts to rebuild and make the PDP strong again, rather than allowing prolonged factionalism to weaken it further.
The PDP has been embroiled in a deepening crisis characterized by factional disputes, legal battles, and leadership vacuums following the expiration of the previous NWC term and contested caretaker arrangements.
Wike's faction has positioned its caretaker committee as the dominant structure, bolstered by recent court rulings, while calls for broader reconciliation, including potential harmonized committees or a unity national convention continue among governors, stakeholders, and other leaders.
Lamido's endorsement of Wike's initiative and his call for inclusive dialogue reflect growing sentiment among some senior PDP figures that pragmatic engagement is essential to prevent the party's collapse and prepare effectively for the 2027 general elections.
