Edo Assembly Summons BEDC Over Persistent Power Outages

The Edo State House of Assembly has summoned the management of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to appear before it on Monday, March 9, 2026, amid growing frustration over chronic and unreliable power supply throughout the state.

During Wednesday's plenary session, Speaker Blessing Agbebaku voiced strong disapproval of the deteriorating electricity situation, calling it "disheartening and unacceptable" due to the severe hardship inflicted on residents and businesses.

Lawmakers highlighted that many assembly members had personally supported their communities by facilitating the installation of new transformers to boost power access. However, BEDC has reportedly demanded full payment before connecting or energizing these transformers, exacerbating the difficulties for citizens already grappling with frequent outages.

The House directed BEDC officials to provide a comprehensive explanation of the ongoing power challenges and the specific policies surrounding the energization of community-donated transformers.

Members emphasized their readiness to pursue necessary legislative actions and stronger oversight to deliver meaningful improvements and relief to the people of Edo State.

This summons follows recent public protests in Benin City against BEDC's erratic service and billing practices, as well as related stakeholder engagements involving state authorities.

The assembly adjourned its sitting until March 9 to accommodate the appearance of BEDC's management.
