The Delta State Government has approved more than ₦34 billion to build modern divisional police headquarters in all 25 local government areas and establish a Special Police Protection Unit (SPU), aiming to strengthen security across the state.
The decision was taken during Friday’s Delta State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in Asaba.
The funding is part of a larger ₦400 billion+ package covering infrastructure, development, and social projects statewide.
Briefing journalists after the session, Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information Charles Aniagwu said the initiative prepares the state for the anticipated federal policy on state policing.
“Ahead of the federal government policy on State Police, the state government today approved the construction of state-of-the-art Divisional Police Headquarters in the 25 LGAs and a Special Police Protection Unit at the cost of about N34 billion,” Aniagwu stated.
The new facilities are designed to improve police presence at the grassroots, enhance operational effectiveness, and create safer environments for residents and businesses.
Delta is already regarded as one of Nigeria’s relatively secure states, and these investments aim to maintain and reinforce that status.
The Special Police Protection Unit will provide specialised security support, complementing the network of divisional headquarters to tackle emerging threats and improve overall policing.
By moving ahead with decentralised police infrastructure, Delta is positioning itself as a leader among states preparing for greater local control over security matters amid ongoing national discussions on state police.
