Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has commended nine senators for defecting to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing their move as a bold and principled act that strengthens credible opposition and safeguards Nigeria's democracy.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Friday, Atiku specifically hailed Senator Binos Yaroe and the eight other distinguished senators who aligned with the ADC on Thursday.
He emphasized that their decision was driven by national interest rather than personal benefit.
“I commend Senator Binos Yaroe and the eight distinguished senators who boldly aligned with the ADC yesterday, not for personal gain, but in the interest of Nigeria’s democracy,” Atiku wrote.
He highlighted the challenging political climate, noting that many politicians are facing pressure to join the ruling party. In contrast, the senators' choice to stand with the opposition represents “a powerful statement of courage, conviction, and commitment to national interest.”
Atiku stressed the vital role of a strong opposition in functional democracy: “Democracy without credible opposition is democracy in name only.”
He added that the defectors' presence in the ADC bolsters the push for accountability, good governance, and a brighter future for Nigerians.
“When leaders choose principle over pressure, the nation wins. Together, we will build a stronger, more just, and more prosperous Nigeria,” he concluded.
The defections, which include prominent figures such as Senator Binos Yaroe (and reportedly others like Aminu Tambuwal in some reports), have positioned the ADC as the leading minority party in the National Assembly.
This realignment comes amid ongoing political shifts ahead of the 2027 general elections and reflects efforts to consolidate opposition forces.
