Datti Baba-Ahmed Denies Endorsing Zamfara Gov’s Defection to APC

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, has firmly denied reports claiming he praised or endorsed Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal's recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement issued by his team on Thursday, March 12, 2026, Baba-Ahmed described the circulating reports as "false and misleading," accusing some media outlets of fabricating the claims or taking his remarks out of context.

The statement read in part:

“For the avoidance of doubt, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed has not issued any statement praising or endorsing Governor Lawal’s defection to the APC.”It further emphasized:

“Senator Baba-Ahmed remains committed to principled politics and democratic accountability and would not make statements attributed to him without official communication through verified channels.”

The denial comes shortly after Governor Dauda Lawal, originally elected in 2023 on the PDP platform, announced his switch to the APC earlier this week.

Lawal cited ongoing internal crises and legal disputes within the PDP, including an appeal court ruling as key factors in his decision.

He described the move as necessary to foster better alignment with the federal government, sustain development in Zamfara, and advance his administration's "Rescue and Rebuild" agenda.

The defection, announced formally by the state's Deputy Governor Mani Mummuni following a stakeholders' meeting in Gusau, has drawn mixed reactions, including welcome from APC chapters in the North-West and abroad.

Baba-Ahmed's team warned that such misinformation could confuse the public and urged media outlets to verify facts through official channels before publication.

The former Labour Party figure reiterated his dedication to transparent and principled political engagement amid Nigeria's evolving political landscape.
