Cross River lawmaker suspended for manhandling wife

The member representing Obubra I State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly, Mr Ovat Agbor has been suspended indefinitely over alleged violent conduct.

Though the assembly was not willing to disclose the nature of violence the suspended legislator was involved in, he is alleged to have constantly manhandled his wife following his excessive drinking and late night habits.

The Assembly strongly condemned the alleged violent attack, saying it was unbecoming of him.

The House reached the resolution during plenary on Thursday following a motion moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo.

They said such behavior was contrary to the ethical standards expected of members of the legislative arm of government.

After deliberations, the House resolved that Agbor be placed on indefinite suspension from all legislative activities.

A committee was thereafter constituted to investigate the matter and report its findings to the House for further legislative action.

Agbor was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms, in compliance with the directive of the House.

Remarking, Speaker of the House, Elvert Ayambem, stated that the House remains committed to upholding discipline, dignity, and the integrity of the legislature.

He emphasized that members of the Assembly must conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the trust reposed in them by the people.

The suspension remains in force pending the outcome of the investigation by the committee set up by the House.

Before now, Governor Bassey Otu and wife, Eyoanwan Otu had rebuked Agbor, saying his actions were irresponsible.

The governor’s wife had been furious over the habitual beating of Mrs Ovat by her husband.

It was learnt that a few weeks ago, the Speaker of the of Assembly, Ayamben had to drive to Agbor’s house in the night to rescue the wife and took her to the hospital.

But in her public statement today, the victim, Glory Agbor said the public ought to respect her privacy even though some wives of legislators, especially wife of the speaker, misled her.

As a result, she has announced her withdrawal from the Legislators’ Wives Association.

“It’s no doubt that some people had tried to paint the name of my family in bad light, but I stand here to vehemently debunk that view against my family, and state it clear here that my husband and I are in peace with each other, even thought issues arose, we have been able to amicablely resolve our differences, like I said, this is my family, and no marriage is totally perfect, please leave my family alone.

“I wish to use this medium to apologize to my dear husband Hon. Ovat Agbor and my entire family over this misconceptions against him. Please forgive me as this will never repeat itself again.”
